“NAZIS IN MADRID” BY PETER BESAS

In 2015 Peter Besas, the author of books such as “Hidden Madrid”, published “Nazis in Madrid”, an exciting story for lovers of this type of literature that reveals the major presence that Nazism had in the Spanish capital between 1939 and 1945.

Botín features in the long list of characters and places mentioned in the book. According to the author, our house was the venue for a meal attended by Beigbeder, a Francoist politician and military man who became Hitler’s intelligence chief, and Admiral Canaris, a known detractor of the Führer and one of the brains behind Operation Valkyrie. Between them, while enjoying a roast suckling pig in the restaurant’s upper storey, they outline a plan to provide Franco with excuses for not accepting Hitler’s proposal of drawing Spain into World War II without this leading to an open break with the German dictator, which at the time appeared as a disastrous outcome if it had occurred.

My goodness… if Botín’s wall could speak…
